the flashdance top 6 albums of 2010 01.02.11
i think this was a pretty decent year for new music. a lot of the same old shit but a few rose to the top...

the same 4 records that made my first half of the year best of list are all still here and i have added two more. teen dream gets our (no contest) vote for number one album of the year and the other five are all equally fantastic. i have added a track from each record for you to sample. please PAY for these albums at your local INDEPENDENT record store because that is what makes the world awesome. these are small-ish artists that are on indie labels, you should support talent like this even if you usually download stuff for free. enjoy!
BEACH HOUSE - TEEN DREAM (take care)

THE NATIONAL - HIGH VIOLET (bloodbuzz ohio)

VAMPIRE WEEKEND - CONTRA (cousins)

PHOSPHORESCENT - HERE'S TO TAKING IT EASY (mermaid parade)

THE DRUMS - THE DRUMS (let's go surfing)

DAVID BANNER & 9TH WONDER - DEATH OF A POP STAR (stutter)

we still miss you sam... 12.15.10
my favorite soul singer covering my favorite everything else singer.

Some say that Blowin In The Wind was the impetuous for A Change Is Gonna Come which is about the best thing i can possibly imagine. Dylan inspires Cooke to pen possibly the most important civil rights song ever made?!?!? Either way I am going to pretend that is definitely what happened.

This video was filmed for the premiere episode of Shindig (September 16, 1964). Sam takes Dylan to church, despite the overbearing whiteness in the room. An amazing performance, really. Also, keep in mind that this was probably one of the first televised instances of a black man being surrounded by white kids, some of whom were females dancing.

RIP Sam Cooke, January 22, 1931 – December 11, 1964

17 flashdance approved first dance songs 09.28.10
i get a lot of requests to suggest songs for first dances... for the last year or so i have been keeping a folder in i tunes dedicated to them and today i thought i'd open that folder for you guys to check out!
i've separated them by age... classics first in no particular order (except for the first one, which is of course, the best!)

to download any of these songs
mac = control click "download as"
pc = right click "save as" (i think...)

That's Where It's At - Sam Cooke (pure magic)

Dream a Little Dream of Me - The Mamas & The Papas (crowd pleaser)

This Will Be Our Year - The Zombies (make your music nerd friends jealous)

Puppet On a String - Gino Washington (this was a client's first dance i had never heard it before the dance and it became an immediate classic in my house... i still play it once a week at least)

Do You Remember? - Bob Marley (not a huge bob marley fan but this song proves the exception to the rule!)

Thirteen - Big Star (another important music nerd staple)

Turn Me On - Nina Simone (in my all time favorite song top ten list)

Til There Was You - The Beatles (paul!!!!!!!)

new-ish future classics
Angel In The Snow - Elliott Smith (this is one of the best songs of my lifetime)

We Rule The School - Belle & Sebastian (do something pretty while you can!)

No One Does It Like You - Department Of Eagles (beautiful, recognizable, but not played out)

Home - Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros (this might need a break for a little while because it was waaaaay overplayed this year but it is a spectacular song)

I Can Tell That We Are Gonna Be Friends - White Stripes (sweet coming of age jam)

Mi Vida - Manu Chao (wifey always sings this one when it comes on and it makes me sooooooo happy!)

Anyone Else - The Moldy Peaches (cute indie jam made famous by the movie juno)

one more that was in juno (not new)
I'm Sticking With You - Velvet Underground

5 Years Time - Noah and the Whale (jesse turned me on to this one. it's real cute)
