Little Joy - Little Joy 11.22.08
It has been a really long time since I have been at a loss of words when it comes to new music. Wifey brought me to see Radiohead before "Hail to the Thief" came out and I was speechless... The first time I heard the White Stripes I knew there was a new king of rock and roll but I couldn't express how happy that made me... Which brings us to Little Joy (okay, that was a little heavy handed, they are nowhere near Radiohead, or The White Stripes, but this record has really struck a chord with me)... Their new self titled record out on Rough Trade is on constant repeat at my house right now. PERFECT!

They have this innocent 50's pop sound that is layered with an imperfect, carefree execution. Sorta feels like you're watching someone rehearse in their basement, (POOF!) or maybe listening to a high quality live recording. I am a big fan of the right kind of imperfection, the French call it, jolie-laide (literally means ugly-pretty) (Jack White is a master of this, he got it from Dylan...) So many producers push that clean, perfect, radio sound too far and end up washing all of the soul out of their artists' music.

Little Joy has this 70's Brazilian feel at times, which is juxtaposed by a healthy dose of Echo Park cute, and a splash of Velvet Underground era Nico. The Strokes' Drummer Fabrizio Moretti is a member, and many have tried to compare the two bands, I can see their point on "Keep Me In Mind" and "How to Hang a Warhol", but I think The Strokes are a gigantic cliche that is more about photo ops, and fashion than beautiful music (which Little Joy is, the latter, not so much). I hate to muddy the beauty of this album by even mentioning it but there it is. Buy this album right now, and go see them perform, I have seen some footage, looks very promising! If wifey can hold the baby in for another few days we are going to see them on Sunday at the Troubadour. Hope to see you there.

Antony and the Johnsons - Disney Concert Hall Wednesday, October 15, 2008 11.10.08
Last night Antony and the Johnsons played Walt Disney Concert Hall accompanied by a 20-piece orchestra featuring arrangements by Nico Muhly (the NYC based 27 year old wunderkind composer who has been working with Antony on a new record) (hooray!), in addition to his continued work with Bjork and Philip Glass.

It was my first time seeing a show at the famed Disney Hall and it really lives up to the hype! The sound is stunning, every seat has a view, and it was the perfect setting for Antony's melancholic voice, which filled the hall with dreamy vibrato, the likes of which I have not witnessed since seeing Nina Simone at Benaroya hall just months before her death. The old tear ducts turned to streaming faucets by the end of the first song, wifey too!

I've never followed his work too closely and admittedly remain ambivalent about much of his recorded material but I hoped when I bought the tickets that his voice and that venue would be a perfect fit and they surely were. I don't often get too excited about new acts, and I spend most of my free time living in the musical hay day of the late 60's and early 70's but I gotta say this show could easily stand up next to many of the masters of that era, and undoubtedly made a lot of the new artists out there feel inadequate in every imaginable way.

The first highlight of the night was a tune off of the extended version of the "I am a Bird" album titled " I Fell in Love with a Dead Boy." What a rare treat it is to see an artist who doesn't look like a model, signing about being yourself and inspiring courage in people who don't fit in with the popular kids... He has his own style for sure, but he is not "stylized" in the way that seemingly every other musician is these days.

The other highlight of the night was the performance of "Another World." Antony also performed his cover of Beyonce's "Crazy in Love." He received two standing ovations, and wifey and I completely geeked the fuck out over his flawless performance.

Antony tracks heavy in my rotation:
Another World
I Fell in Love with a Dead Boy
For Today I Am a Boy
Knockin on Heaven's Door (Dylan cover)
If it Be Your Will (Leonard Cohen cover) This is a monster!
