emily & neil surveillance video 05.29.09
image of Nico from La Dolce Vita

When I got all set up for Emily & Neil's wedding I noticed the venue had a small security camera pointed right at the dancefloor! I thought it was odd, but I got started and forgot all about it. Then the party was off the hook and it got me thinking...

The following day Whitney and I invented a story for the venue manager about a piece of missing equipment and they actually gave us the footage! If it were better quality they could sell these... Hey wait a second.

this is just a teaser... the rest of the wedding will be up here, and there next week... See you in Palm Springs.

try this with your ipod... 05.26.09
People often ask me why i play vinyl and i have a million reasons but this video of 45 King slaying it with a couple of toy turntables and a radio shack mixer is the best one I've come up with in awhile.

There is a John Lennon quote from a really good '71 Rolling Stone interview "I'm an artist, and if you give me a tuba, I'll bring you something out of it." I think this video punctuates that point... In that same interview Lennon is asked if he thinks he is a genius and he simply said "Yes" ha! amazing, who else could ever have gotten away with that? Dali maybe... Post Beatles John Lennon is as real as it gets.

black cab sessions 05.22.09
Just found this site on gorilla vs. bear and I am so happy! The tag line is one song. one take. one cab. The idea is this, get every great musician who happens to be in London for a show or for press or whatever (who presumably has to get across town anyway) to play acoustic guitar and sing a song in the cab on the way and make a video of it. AMAZING! I have watched the Grizzly Bear (below (Incredible) new album is t-minus 1 day away!) Elvis Perkins, Okkervill River, Phosphorescent, and Bon Iver episodes so far. I love to see artists play acoustic and have it be rough around the edges, people spend way too much time perfecting the soul out of things these days... I like my art a bit raw

Music Reviews

hello my name is michael and i'm a recovering producer 05.21.09
I know this might seem like a bit of a cliche but all of my best buddies in LA make movies ... Some for a living, some for art, some study it in school but all of them do, or have done, it. Well I am like a junkie when it comes to production...any kind of production! Give me the keys to a 24' truck and I will rally it! Need something moved? Got a forklift? DONE! Need a bunch of people to operate one piece of gear? Ha! I cannot get enough of it. Needless to say, I fell off the wagon last weekend...

Director Zachary Sluser (directing) in between takes with (from left): Xander Berkeley, Sarah Utterback and John Hawkes.

John Hawkes and Robin Weigert (both of Deadwood fame) as Bobby and Ingrid

I'm on the right there (supervising).

The project is a short entitled "Path Lights" which was written for the New Yorker by Tom Drury read more about that, and see a lot more great photos here. THIS is a recent-ish music video produced by the same crew for one of my favorite new-ish bands Phosphorescent I'm real proud of my good buddies who are all regular contributors to the flashdance between gigs.

About Us

trifecta of coincidence... 05.19.09
as the number of people in the world increases, and the means to communicate becomes easier and cheaper, coincidence seems to grow exponentially (an x y coordinate graph chart for this would be a great visual but i am more of an english and history type guy...) i wonder how long it will be before coincidence becomes absurd and trite, when there will literally be no surprise registered when the most (seemingly) random occurrence is just commonplace... while we aren't there yet i have certainly had a bizarre couple of weeks. yesterday i found out through a bizzare set of circumstances that my friend eastside bride is married to someone who i have known for like 6 years (though have been out of contact with) i have had all of these conversations with her about her husband and she presumably had been having conversations with him about me and the flashdance (oh, whitney & i used to work with him at a company owned by one of the owners of the ace hotel...) anyway guess you had to be there but my head hurts from thinking about it. but back to why we are here... our friends opened the ace hotel & swim club in palm springs a few months back and travel & leisure wanted to do a piece for their june issue on the hotel (which by the way is stunning!). our friends at the ace called me up and asked if wifey, elodie, and i would be "models" for their shoot. we did and the results are below...
a couple weeks later we were hired to shoot / dj a wedding for one of the editors of travel & leisure (completely unrelated) which is rad because now i have a buddy there. then a few weeks after that another person from travel & leisure calls me out of the blue (unrelated) to ask if i would come up with a summer jams playlist for their summer travel issue. i have an idea, i'm going to start asking the world for the coincidence i WANT to happen and see how it works out... dear travel and leisure, thanks for thinking of me recently! i've been thinking, i would love to tag along with you guys lay in hammocks with my daughter and create the soundtrack to your lives, you can publish whatever you want or not... give me a call when you have a second. i'm thinking costa rica in november is as good a place as any to start! i only fly first class, oh, and i'd like to invite my friend bob dylan to join us... thanks -MA
